Reflection 1

As the Head Copy Editor of my publication, I am responsible for three copy staffers. To make them the best editors possible, I assign them sections of the AP Stylebook to get comfortable with AP Style, which is very similar to our publication’s style. Additionally, I have my staffers make copy presentations on different grammar rules every task cycle so that they can hone in on specific areas of copy editing, which we then present in our section or to the whole class.

Reflection 2

To be a great editor, I learned about what it takes to be a leader. For instance, I have read emails received from Media Now, which go over the qualities of leaders. To fully take in these emails, I wrote notes on them and reviewed them to remind me what it takes to lead my staffers and create an environment in which they are comfortable working and collaborating with one another. I also make an effort to talk with my staffers about their days or random topics to connect with them on a personal level.

Reflection 3
January Tasks

As a leader, I try to lead by example. To do so, I remain very organized to show my staffers the importance of staying on top of assignments because the workload of being on a publication can be overwhelming. To keep myself organized, I tend to keep to-do lists. So for publication work, I created task tracking lists for my staffers so that they can check off the work they have completed and know what work still needs to be done.

Reflection 4
February Learning Log

I have watched TED Talks about leadership to get inspiration. These TED Talks were valuable to me because I am an auditory learner, so listening to people talk about how to be a great leader really helped me absorb the information. Then, writing reflections on these videos helped further my understanding of leadership. Also, I have been able to apply what I have learned from these videos by treating my staffers with respect, kindness, and understanding.
